One of English football’s great rivalries will be renewed at Old Trafford this afternoon as Man United and Liverpool meet for the first time this season.
As well as the bragging rights up for grabs, Jurgen Klopp’s in-form Reds have the chance to move within a point of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League with victory.
United, meanwhile, need a statement result to ease some of the pressure that is once again mounting on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian’s side have gone three games without a win in the Premier League, including last weekend’s 4-2 defeat at Leicester, while another thrilling European comeback against Atalanta in midweek has done little to appease the doubters, given the woeful first half display that saw United go in 2-0 down to the Italian side before turning the game on its head.

Premier League head-to-head
Manchester United wins: 28
Standard Sport prediction
Back in May, Liverpool swept to a 4-2 win at Old Trafford, but tight, low scoring games are the usual fare whenever these two old rivals meet. United haven’t beaten Liverpool in the league since March 2018 – a run stretching six matches – and have won just one of their last 10 Premier League meetings with Liverpool.
They say form goes out the window in these titanic clashes, but recent head to head results, as well as the respective performances this season, points to a comfortable win for the visitors.
Manchester United 1-3 Liverpool.
Liverpool team news
Thiago Alcantara misses out for Liverpool with injury, but Curtis Jones is back in contention, while Fabinho will likely come back into the starting lineup, having come on as a half-time substitute in midweek.
“What’s clear is that Curtis will train with us today, that’s the plan. And Thiago not. So these are the two things I know for the moment,” said Klopp on Friday.
“Curtis will train with us today completely, he should be in contention. Thiago is running again, which is a good sign. I am not sure if he will return before the international break. But for sure after it. We will see.”
Man United team news
Manchester United have fitness doubts over both Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes following their to-and-fro clash with Atalanta in the Champions League.
“Games like Wednesday night are always going to bring knocks and bruises,” Solskjaer said at his pre-match press conference.
“We do have two or three from that game. Bruno might be one of them that is a doubt, but he’s doing everything he can to be ready.”
