Leona Lewis reveals she still has a good relationship with Simon Cowell 15 years after the X Factor


It’s been 15 years since she won The X Factor in 2006.

And Leona Lewis revealed she still stays in contact with her mentor at the time Simon Cowell on Saturday night’s The Jonathan Ross Show.   

The singer, 36, opened up about leaving Simon’s record label, Syco, in 2014 saying: ‘It was [an amicable split] – we’re still good, we keep in contact, he checks in on me, I check in on him.’

She continued: ‘Throughout the show, he was definitely a real mentor and really involved in helping me with song choices, arrangements. He’s been a big supporter.’

‘[The X Factor was] such a huge platform… It was at the time when YouTube was starting to bubble up… the videos would go viral, it was crazy.’  

The beauty looked incredible in a purple sequins gown which donned a sizzling split and knot detailing around the midriff. 

She paired her festive ensemble with elegant silver drop earrings and a chic bangle.

Leona was immediately signed to Syco, following her victory and went on to sell more than 20 million records with the company. 

However, in the Better in Time hitmaker walked away from Cowell’s label in favour of Island Records.

The long-running talent show was axed for good in July after 17 years with Simon saying he didn’t want it to ‘become a bit of a joke.’

Speaking to The Sun, Leona, said it was difficult to have her looks picked apart but believes Little Mix, who were on the show five years after her, got it even worse.

She said: ‘It is hard. I feel so much for those girls that came off and were picked apart for their looks. You never get into this thinking about anything other than, “I’m just going to sing and that’s it.” I definitely had moments of self-doubt, for sure.

‘When you’re fed these images or have people picking apart your appearance, or “Who wore it best?” — stuff like that — it gets into your head. That did definitely affect me.’   

Leona added she thinks there may have been less pressure on her because she wasn’t expected to be the ‘hottest person alive’ because of the type of music she made.

The hitmaker said the show’s ending came at the right moment and its important the industry keeps moving with the times.   

She said: ‘It was bound to happen at some point and I feel like it was the right time. We are in a different day and age now, with streaming and all the different platforms that we are on — there is so much out there.’
