How many Cabinet ministers are there and what do they do?

he Cabinet has seen a reshuffle in recent weeks following a wave of resignations led by former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and former Health Secretary Sajid Javid.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed new ministers to the Cabinet ahead of his resignation announcement last week.

And more changes could be on the horizon as a number of Cabinet ministers intend to run for the prime minister’s job.

But how many Cabinet ministers are there and what do they do?

How many Cabinet ministers are there?

There are usually around 20 Cabinet ministers, including the prime minister, and there are currently 22 Cabinet ministers.

They are the most senior ministers in the Government and are chosen by the prime minister to lead on specific policy areas such as Health, Transport, and Foreign Affairs.

Who are the Cabinet ministers?

The current Cabinet ministers and their titles are the following:

The following Cabinet ministers resigned in July:

  • Sajid Javid, Heath Secretary
  • Rishi Sunak, Chancellor
  • Simon Hart, Secretary of State for Wales
  • Brandon Lewis, Northern Ireland Secretary
  • Michelle Donelan, Education Secretary

Additionally, Michael Gove, Housing Secretary, was sacked after telling the prime minister to resign.
